Eyelash tint after a lash lift: black or blue-black, which tint should you choose and how should you apply it?
When to tint lifted lashes, why the processing time changes, deep black or blue-black depending on the client, classic or hybrid, which oxidant to use: the protocol we follow in the salon, with the lash tints available from Brow.X.
Tinting is the shortest step of a lash lift, and the one that makes the biggest difference in the final photo. A perfect lift on light or brown lashes remains invisible until they are tinted; conversely, an eyelash tint applied at the wrong time or left on too long on freshly lifted lashes produces a dull, uneven result that does not last two weeks.
This guide answers the questions we receive every week: should you tint before or after the lift, how long should you leave it on, what is the difference between black and blue-black, and which tint should you choose from Brow.X Professional's eyebrow & eyelash tint collection.
A freshly lifted lash has an open cuticle: it takes color twice as fast as an untreated lash. The processing time for a lash tint can therefore never be copied from one treatment to another.
01 — The Right Time
Should you tint the lashes before, during, or after the lash lift?
The answer is always the same: after step 2 (setting) and before step 3 (treatment), while the lashes are still positioned on the pad. Here's why this order is non-negotiable.
Never before the lift
The lotion used in step 1 opens the cuticle and removes some of the pigments. Tint applied before the lift looks faded, and you will have damaged the lash twice for no reason.
After setting, on the pad
Once step 2 has been rinsed and the lashes dried, the fiber is open and perfectly separated on the silicone pad: the color penetrates quickly and settles down to the root without clumps. This is the ideal time.
Never after the treatment
The cream used in step 3 (keratin, argan, oils) closes the cuticle and forms a greasy film. Tinting over it is the main reason for “my tint didn't take” after a lash lift.
On dry lashes, not damp ones
Water or leftover setting lotion dilutes the mixture and makes the tint run toward the eyelid. Dab with a dry cotton pad or a microbrush before applying.

02 — The Color
Deep black or blue-black: which shade for which client?
All brands offer at least two blacks, and the difference is not just a marketing detail. Deep black (Deep Black, Black, No. 1) is a neutral black with a slightly warm undertone: it gives the lash a mascara effect without cooling it down. Blue-black (Blue Black, Blue Night, No. 2) is a black with a blue undertone: on an already dark lash, it creates the impression of a more intense, shinier black because the blue absorbs the reddish reflections of the hair.
Deep black The safe choice
Blue-black The intense one
What we choose in the salon
- Blonde client or very light lashes: deep black, short processing time. Pure blue-black on blonde lashes can sometimes create an unnatural slate-colored reflection; if she wants more intensity, mix 3 parts black with 1 part blue-black.
- Chestnut-haired client: this is where blue-black comes into its own. It neutralizes reddish tones and creates a true black, whereas deep black alone can sometimes leave a warm hint.
- Brunette or Black client: blue-black for a “lacquered” effect, or deep black if she prefers a matte result. The difference is most noticeable at the root and on the lower lashes.
- Client who wants a very soft result: a dark brown (RefectoCil Natural Brown No. 3, Noemi Dark Brown, Bronsun Dark Brown) on blonde lashes frames the eyes without a mascara effect.
- White or gray lashes: deep black, processing time at the upper end of the range, second coat if necessary. Blue-black on white hair turns blue.
03 — The texture
Classic, hybrid, or lash-specific tint: which one should you use after a lift?
Three product families can tint lashes, and they do not behave the same way on a lash opened up by a lift.
Classic cream
Hybrid gel or cream
Dedicated lash tint Lift-special
The “eyeliner” effect of hybrids is a real selling point for a brunette client who wants a defined look; it is a drawback for a client who asked for “a natural look.” Ask the question before opening the tube, and if you choose a hybrid, protect the lower eyelid.
04 — The protocol
Lash tinting on lifted lashes: the step-by-step protocol
- Prepare the mixture at the end of step 2. Tint + oxidant from the same brand, in the manufacturer's ratio (1:1 for Bronsun, Noemi, and Zola; for RefectoCil, approximately 2 cm of tint to 10 drops of liquid oxidant), in a glass mixing dish or a silicone mixing palette, never metal.
- Rinse and dry the setting lotion. Remove step 2 with a damp microbrush followed by dry cotton. There should be no lotion residue or water on the lashes.
- Protect the lower eyelid. Use a hydrogel patch or 2-in-1 lower-lash patch: it prevents the tint from marking the skin and allows you to tint the lower lashes at the same time.
- Apply from root to tip, with the lashes still on the pad. Use the fine tip of the 2-in-1 tool or a microbrush, in a thin, covering layer: the tint should coat each lash, not form a block.
- Halve the usual processing time, then observe. On lifted lashes, allow 3 to 6 minutes for a classic tint and 5 to 8 for a hybrid tint, instead of 8 to 15 minutes on untouched lashes. Check the root: as soon as it is black and even, it is ready.
- Remove without water. Use dry cotton to remove the excess, then slightly damp cotton, always moving from the root toward the tip, with the eyes closed. Only afterward should you remove the pad.
- Apply step 3 (care treatment) and brush. Keratin, argan, or serum: now that the color is fixed, the cream closes the cuticle and seals in the pigment. A Y-brush separates the lashes without deforming them.
- Client instruction: 24 hours without water, steam, or oil-based makeup remover. This is the time needed for the color and lift to stabilize.
Processing time on lifted lashes for a classic tint, for a hybrid tint, and the waiting time before the first contact with water. On untouched lashes, increase this to 8–15 minutes depending on the brand.
05 — The oxidant
Which developer should I use for an eyelash tint?
3% is the standard for lashes across all brands, and it should always be the oxidant from the dye's brand: the consistency of the mixture and the development speed are calibrated together. What changes is the texture.
Cream 3% — our choice for lashes
The mixture stays in place on the pad, does not run toward the eye, and applies cleanly at the root. RefectoCil Cream Oxidant 3%, Noemi Cream Developer 3%, Bronsun Cream Developer 3%, Zola Oxidant 3%.
Liquid 3%
The long-standing classic from RefectoCil and Thuya, measured drop by drop. A more fluid, faster mixture, but one that requires precision near the eye. RefectoCil Liquid Oxidant 3%, Thuya Oxidant, Pink Flash Liquid Developer 3%.
Gel 3%
The thickest texture, ideal for a hybrid tint that you want to keep crisp at the root without overflow. Noemi Gel Developer 3%.
1.8% — for fine, light, or weakened lashes
Gentler development, less saturated results, and less harsh on a lash already opened by the lift. Bronsun 1.8% or Zola Oxidant 1.8% with the dye from the same brand. Never use 6% on lashes.

06 — The mistakes
Why the tint does not take (or last) after a lash lift
Care product applied before tinting
The number 1 mistake. The keratin or argan oil from step 3 creates a barrier. Order: setting → rinsing → tinting → care.
Lashes still damp or not rinsed properly
Residue from step 2 or water dilutes the mixture: pale color, runny application. Dry with a cotton pad before applying.
Powder or glue residue on the lashes
With a Korean powder lash lift, excess product left behind prevents the dye from coating the lash. Clean with a damp cotton pad before tinting.
Mixture prepared too early
A dye + developer mixture oxidizes in the air. Prepared at the start of the appointment and used 30 minutes later, it barely colors anymore. Mix during setting, not beforehand.
Processing time copied from brows
15 minutes on lifted lashes = lashes that are too dark when removed, but above all an overloaded fiber that releases pigment over a few days. On an opened, short lash under supervision.
Over-processed lashes at step 1
A lift that is left on too long makes the lash porous: it takes on color very quickly and loses it just as quickly. The cause lies earlier in the process: reread the 5 mistakes to avoid with a Korean lash lift.
If your issue concerns the longevity of the lift itself rather than the color, the article Why doesn't my Korean lash lift last? reviews the causes one by one.
07 — The choice
Which lash tint should you choose at Brow.X?
Here is how we guide professionals according to their practice. All these tints are compatible with lash lifts, provided you follow the order and processing times above.
You do a lot of lash services and want the classic go-to product
RefectoCil is the most widely used lash tint in salons for one simple reason: it colors the hairs without staining the skin, one tube provides dozens of applications, and processing time is short. Blue Black No. 2 is the go-to lash shade, Pure Black No. 1 for fair clients or those who want a natural look, and Deep Blue No. 2.1 for a bold blue tone on black lashes. Use with RefectoCil cream developer or 3% liquid developer.
You lift and tint at every appointment
The Noemi Hybrid Lash Tint was formulated for this purpose: just two blacks, Black Night and Blue Night, a vegan formula enriched with conditioning ingredients, advertised as compatible with lash lifts and laminations, and approximately 60 applications per tube. It is mixed 1:1 with the Noemi 3% Cream Developer or 3% Gel Developer. If you already have the Noemi brow range, the Black 2.0 and Blue Black 2.8 shades from the 15 ml Hybrid Tint do the same job.
You work with Bronsun on eyebrows and want a made-up look
In the gel range, No. 1 Deep Black and No. 3 Blue Black are intended for lashes and create that famous eyeliner effect at the roots that lasts for several days. Bronsun Cream Dye in Blue Black is gentler on the skin, making it more comfortable immediately after a lift. Always mix 1:1 with 3% Developing Cream, or 1.8% for fine lashes. For eyebrows, our guide to the 8 Bronsun shades complements this one.
You want to color and condition at the same time
Two options for weakened lashes or clients who have lash lifts in succession: Thuya Deep Black Eyebrow & Eyelash Tint, a dual-action formula with argan oil and keratin, used with Thuya oxidant; and Pink Flash Black Blue 2-in-1 with Keratin, a blue-black tint that incorporates conditioning into the same application, with its 3% Liquid Developer. At Zola, Blue Black Collagen is the only shade in the range intended for lashes, mixed 1:1 with Zola 3% or 1.8% oxidant.
08 — After
Maintenance, touch-ups, and what you can offer for resale
An eyelash tint lasts 4 to 6 weeks, which is the eyelash growth cycle: it does not fade; it goes away with the lashes as they fall out. The touch-up therefore naturally coincides with your next lash lift appointment, 6 to 8 weeks later. In between, three guidelines will help protect your results: no water or steam for 24 hours, use an oil-free makeup remover, and brush your lashes daily.
This is also the time to suggest a take-home product. An oil-free eyelash & eyebrow shampoo for makeup removal, and a keratin serum such as Maxymova Goccia Blue to nourish eyelashes that have just been lifted and tinted. A client who leaves with her serum comes back with eyelashes in better condition, and your next lift is easier.
Finally, tinting is a service to charge for, not something to offer free of charge: during a lift appointment, it represents ten minutes of work and a few cents' worth of product. Our article How much to charge for a lash lift in 2026? will help you position the add-on.
09 — FAQ
FAQ — eyelash tint and lash lift
Can eyelashes be tinted on the same day as a lash lift?
Yes, that is actually the best time: after step 2 (setting), with dry eyelashes still on the pad, before the treatment in step 3. The open cuticle takes in the color within a few minutes.
Eyelash tint: black or blue-black?
Deep black for light, blonde or white eyelashes and a natural result; blue-black for light brown to black eyelashes and an intense, glossy effect. On very light eyelashes, pure blue-black may look blue-gray.
How long should I leave tint on lifted eyelashes?
About half the time indicated for untreated eyelashes: 3 to 6 minutes for a classic tint such as RefectoCil, 5 to 8 minutes for a hybrid tint such as Bronsun or Noemi. Monitor the roots rather than the clock.
Which developer should I use for an eyelash tint?
The 3% developer from the same brand as the tint, preferably in cream or gel form so the mixture does not run into the eye. Use 1.8% (Bronsun, Zola) for fine or weakened eyelashes. Never use 6% on eyelashes.
Why didn't my eyelash tint take after the lash lift?
In the vast majority of cases, because the treatment (keratin, argan) was applied before tinting, or because the eyelashes were still damp or covered with residue. More rarely, the mixture was prepared too early or the developer had expired.
Is a hybrid tint suitable for eyelashes?
Yes, with the black shades in the range (Bronsun No. 1 and No. 3, Noemi Black and Blue Black, Zola Blue Black). It also stains the skin at the roots, creating an eyeliner effect for a few days: protect the lower eyelid with a patch.
How long does eyelash tint last?
4 to 6 weeks, the length of the eyelash renewal cycle. Touch-ups are done at the next lash lift appointment.
